Sketch Dump 5: Sketchbook 1

On my Tumblr this morning I said something about doing a sketchdump with stuff from my old sketchbook I found this morning. This sketchbook was from early last year, during school and these are the sketches from it. It doesn't list how many pages were in it, but over the course of time, I probably ripped out a good amount and the rest all have notes on them, mainly to-do lists and schedules from Finals Week. Anywho, here's what we have from this sketchbook.

Oh and not that it really matters I guess, but this was a 5x7in sketchbook.

1. Old character sketches of what looks like prototype designs for Redington. As you can see, I've always wanted himt ot have a beard, scruffy hair and a patchy hat. This is surprisingly dated from Sept 7, 2010. So - exactly a year ago this was drawn! That's actually nifty.

2. Just a doodle that I did. I don't know who this is a character of - I just drew her. I do like how I did the thing with her hair the back though This is also from last Sept 7.

3. The top bit of this page was notes for my first Maya class. The drawing here is a prototype design sketch for a character I was working on for an animation assignment. There's more of him in this sketchbook (actually directly below).

4. Random doodle of James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2 with his trusty steel pipe. The light circles in the background (not sure if you can see them) were supposed to be nurses, but I didn't get around to that.

5. Ahh here we are. That character from before. Only this is his more refined version. We were doing expression/emotion tests, so I was going from angry to happy. This was my character. He's a slightly bi-polar German Colonel named Josef Fischer. I would later go on to create a family for him, despite only needing him for a few days for the assignment.

6. Josef's daughter, Sofie. Looking at her now, she seems to be a prototype of Veronica in a way. When you see the rest of the Fischer family, you may see what I mean. She's one of the few people who can break Josef's anger, almost instantly. He loves his little girl.

7. Josef's son, Miles. He's not on good terms with his father for a number of reasons, mainly his career choice. He once wanted to be a soldier but then decided to be a journalist. He generally only comes back around to visit his sister and mother, as his father generally ignores him.

8. Another doodle of Sofie. Also, looking back through my book, I noticed I forgot to scan in something. It was a doodle of Josef with Sofie, hugging. Though, if you look back a few dumps ago, you'll see something like it, only with Sigel and Veronica. I think they might be darn near the same Oops.

9. Random female character doodle. I think... this MAY have been an initial design for the character now known as Wezn. I'm not sure.

10. Josef's wife, Adrianna. I notice I have a thing for mother's with long hair that are pulled back and slung over the shoulder. Huh. Anyway, she's a rather gentle, supportive woman and still manages to keep her cool despite the tensions between her husband and son. Being as Josef dotes over Sofie, Adrianna likes to spoil her baby boy.

11. Rough height comparison of the Fischer family. I've also noticed that I tend to gravitate towards the same family structure: Father, mother, older brother, younger sister. And I will tell you why. Father/daughter stuff make me melt like butter and I've always wanted an older brother. I would say it's subconscious want for an older brother that does this, but being as I'm aware of that, it's not really subconscious now is it? Maybe the Fischers are a kind of prototype of the Abney family, though I gave them two dogs, though one of them died along with Olivia... Anywho, moving on.

12. I think this was James again. I think I was trying to add some realism here. Not sure.

13. PKMN Trainer me~ Yay. But not really. I was bored. And this was during a point where my hair was longer.

14. Regular me saying "No." Why I'm saying that, I have no idea. I tend to draw myself a lot I guess.... And I do have that jacket - it's from Cozumel and has a gecko on it. Did I ever tell you guys I once had a pet gecko? Yes, I did - When I was in the Philippines, my grandpa caught one and put a string around its neck and let me walk it around on a shoebox lid. I was like... three. I can't remember it, but I bet it was AWESOME.

15. This was a drawing I did while up in Ottawa last year for the animation festival. Knowing that I can tell you this was done around Oct 24 or whatever. Anyway, this is Frida, the Hobo with a Gun. I have no explanation for her whatsoever, though I do remember trying to come up with a theme song for her.

16. Last but not least, these were two character designs for my Experimental Animation project last winter. They are nameless characters and have only been referred to as the Girl and the Captain. The story was the two were friends and the Captain was a frequent visitor of the Girl, who was a painter who lived in a small harbor town. One day, the Girl becomes lonely after many months of not seeing her friend and losses her confidence in her ability and rows out to sea, only to be caught in a storm and tossed out of her boat. The Captain appears in his fishing boat and rescues her from the sea and takes her back to the small town. She resumes painting, now inspired by her close friend, despite their times apart. I had doodles for the Girl posted on here at one point, but I think they may be in my Scraps now.

Anywho! That's all I have for this sketchbook. i'll see about maybe scanning in some of my older work and posting it for you guys to see. That and it's always fun looking bad at older stuff, though you'll sometimes want to burn it. But yeah Neat.
