Series: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Background: Strangely, for a character I again didn’t do much with, there is actually some development/background for Vilee here, which, according to my notes/ramblings, I clarified was pronounced “vi-lee” instead of like… “vil-ee” or however else you could think of to pronounce it. It seems I wrote a whole treatment up for Vilee and what reads as kind of a bad fanfiction of a sequel for Twilight Princess, and while I’ll abridge that here, I’ll link to a Google Doc with her background. I would link to the original dA submission, but considering it’s actually in Storage, I’m not sure how well that work work. In regards to the Google Doc, I have changed any of the content from the original description; I just spell checked it to get rid of some of the silly typos I tend to make when writing things down in a spurt of inspiration or whatever, hahaha. You’ll still get an unfiltered view of whatever writing style I had when I was 18-19, which could be fun.
Anyway, backstory/character stuff time: Vilee here was the daughter of Zant, who sought revenge after his rise and fall to power during the events of Twilight Princess. Her relation to Zant seem to be kept a secret and was relatively unknown, mainly for her protection. She still seemed to share his views and bitterness towards the succession of power in the Twilight Realm and was unquestioning to her father’s feelings towards it and was completely supportive of his quest to take the Throne.
Her aversion to the “unfairness” of the system only deepened after his defeat, so after his death, decided to tread down the dark path of forbidden magic that could hopefully resurrect him and provide greater power to use to attempt to take over once again.
Vilee’s dabbling in forbidden magic did grant her heightened abilities and powers, but as they are forbidden, came with a handful of downsides. The use of these long-forgotten spells and rituals effectively cursed her, branding her with painful markings which would eventually lead to the User turning to stone.
Her first attempts to bring Zant back also resulted in the unintended resurrection of Ganondorf, and though she wasn’t privy to his true role in Zant’s first uprising, she treated him with caution while seeing him as a useful tool in her plans.
The story would basically follow a similar setup to the one in Twilight Princess, with an older Vilee wielding an ancient artifact called the Scroll of Twilight (that actually causes her appear older than she actually is) and a Resurrected Zant taking over the Twilight Realm, though Vilee would take measures to avoid the mistakes of the first attempt, including Ganondorf’s utter disregard to their well being.
This means a heavy use of the Scroll and its forbidden magic, allowing both her and Zant to become even greater threats than Ganon and actually managing to wrangle his power under their control. Of course, this overuse and Vilee’s determination and desperation ultimately leads to her downfall, as the forgotten magic does take its full toll on her and turns her to stone. This leads to whatever power she had supplied to both her and Zant to fade away, allowing him to eventually be defeated as well.
Anyway, like I said, I’m trying to abridge the giant rant I already typed up forever ago, so I’m just gonna keep it at that. For the full character run down I wrote, click the little link here below.
I do actually have older art for this character, though, so let’s look at those next, haha.
I don’t have a lot of backstory for these older drawings, however, because they were just short, little concept things. Even though I did type up a long background treatment for the character, I didn’t do much with her beyond that.
I guess as a note, the armor is based off birds in this instance, even though I did love Zant’s original chameleon based armor. According to my notes, it’s supposed to be model off of birds of prey (which one, I haven’t the foggiest) and later is recolored to be gold, to then symbolize a phoenix, in relation to Zant’s resurrection.
These are the only things I have though for this character and looking back at it is a little cringe-inducing, mainly because of the old art, hahaha.
These were all done back in 2010 (according to when I posted them on dA anyway), so I was just out of high school and in my first years of college, so by this time, I had my Intuos4 and had moved to using Paint Tool SAI for all of my work.
Name: Rey Mustang
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Background: Another one with pretty little real development, but here’s Rey Mustang (I’m super good with names), who is Roy’s younger sister. I didn’t do much with her either, except for a failed RP board and a few RPs back on the good ol’ MSN when that was still a thing.
While part of the State Military, which she only joined to find her brother after he left, she isn’t an alchemist of any sort and instead worked more so with intelligence gathering. Later minor development of her led to her more or less being a spy and a master of disguise. She also had the distinct trait of not being able to cook, which seems to be a trope I still like to use.
Unfortunately, beyond that, haven’t done much else with her. That and her plausibility (which is a thing I consider way too much nowadays for things, even fan characters) is a bit up in the air, considering the actual timeline for the series. When she was created, only the 2003 anime had existed and I was behind on the manga, so she existed based off that alternate universe.
In the actual timeline presented in Brotherhood and with Roy’s background, she could exist, but it would be a very tight time frame for it to still be plausible. But again, that’s just a bunch of hoopla I spend way too much time thinking about lol.
There’s also, unfortunately, no old art for her either, nor any records of the aforementioned RPs. I combed through all my old sketchbooks and binders and… nothing :c
Series: Final Fantasy VII
Background: Not a lot for this one, but a pretty “obvious, bad” fan character to say the least. This is Sophie, another female clone, this time of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. Really, in a way, I guess she’s a bit plausible, considering the remnants and such from the game and Advent Children and there being crazier things in Final Fantasy anyway, but that doesn’t matter much anymore.
I never really did much for her and there unfortunately is no old drawings of her. I do remember though, as the embarrassing thing I did with this character, is that I wrote a short fanfic for her and had asked a teacher to look it over. I don’t remember what the response to it was, though, and what happened to that fanfic is a mystery.
There’s a good chance it’s on one of the hard drives I pulled out of our old computers and there’s a possibility I could get it off there if I converted those to externals, but whoo boy that’s an adventure for another time, cause who knows what kind of old, crazy stuff I could find on those things.
Series: Sonic the Hedgehog
Background: Shae is one of the first fan characters I can really remember doing anything with at length. I got into my Sonic phase in middle school after the release of the Gamecube and the port of Sonic Adventure 2. It was one of the first games I had rented for the system, back in the days of Blockbusters and movie rentals and my parents actually got me my own copy for getting good grades on a report card. Shadow was my favorite character from that game, and being young, I remember getting very emotional when he “died” at the end of that game. I also remember getting all wrapped up in theories about his androids and stuff later on when Sonic Heroes came out. Also, for another point of reference, when I got into Sonic, it was the waning period of dial-up Internet.
Anyway, being super into it, enough that I carted around my strategy guide for SA2B with me to school all the damn time that now it’s held together with packaging tape, I created Shae.
Shae, as probably cliche as it may be, is a female clone of Shadow that was treated as his daughter, though that’s really all I did in terms of her story. I did attempt to RP with her a bit on a forum called Sonic Zone Forums, which was a place I was very active on back in the day, where I did Sonic character requests, usually in Sonic Riders style. But aside from that, I really didn’t do much in terms of development with Shae. As seen above though, she did go through quite a few variations.
The reasons for those variations, I’m… not really sure anymore. If I could, I would go back to the Sonic Zone Forums and check, but Shae was back from… 2005 at least and since then, the site’s been hacked multiple times and probably doesn’t even exist in any recognizable form.
The one thing that is pretty obvious is she went from friendly and energetic to more edgy, to the point where she’s trudging around in turtlenecks and trench coats and completely lost the pink streaks that really tied her back to Shadow. I think it was probably a way for a younger me to make her more “original” or more “mature” or something, but again, I can’t remember the reasoning of 14-year-old Forte.
Now, because I was really active doing requests back at this time, there is quite a few old drawings of Shae still kicking around. I do remember other older ones that I unfortunately cannot find and do not have the digital links to anymore. But there are some, so let’s look at some old Forte art, shall we?
Version 1A, Version 1B
So it seems that even for this first variation, it had it’s own… variations. I guess I didn’t know what the heck I wanted to do or was just trying out different things. Why the camo? NO idea. I probably thought it just looked cool at the time.
Version 2A, Version 2B
The second variation at least had some consistency with all the drawings I have of her (there are quite a few that just depict her in different Sonic styles really), but I think that’s because I did them like one after another. I find the choice of making her more “edgy” with the longer bangs over the eye, yet dressing her in all white to be interesting, though what’s going on with the large gems everywhere, I haven’t a clue.
And of course she gets a katana here, cause katanas are fucking badass, meaning any badass character needs one. If that decision was influenced any by the release of Shadow the Hedgehog the game, I can’t remember.
The last version of Shae, like mentioned above, was the final form into full edge-zone, I guess, cause again, I took away nearly all color from the design and put her in all black. Though looking at this, with the way the quills are, she looks more like a cat, though I did have a cat character during this same “era” of design and as a note, the other characters that are rendered like this are also in sweaters, so I guess that was just my design preference at the time.
Interesting note about this particular image, it was made during the time I was still working with mouse and keyboard for everything (I didn’t get my tablet till I graduated from high school) and did this entire thing in GIMP with the pen tool. How I had the patience for that back in the day, I do not know, hahaha.
The other images above were all more or less scanned in and I’m pretty sure cleaned up using a program called Inkscape and then colored in GIMP.
